Maker Bhavan Technovation SANDBOX
Maker Bhavan Technovation Sandbox is conceived to encourage the students to create relevant, engaging, learning experiences and develop deployable solutions. The campus and its vicinity will act as a testbed for both need identification and deployment of solutions. Participating students will gain experience in product development, leadership skills & entrepreneurship which will be useful in their subsequent careers.
This programme is led and administered by the student leadership team of Tinkerers’ Lab under the umbrella of ITC. It is funded by the Maker Bhavan Foundation, a charitable trust based out of Palo Alto, California. The foundation is founded by IIT Bombay Alumni.

Project logistics
Team size:Â
A team of students can consist of maximum 4 members
Students from any stream of PG or UG can make a team
Note: Interdisciplinary teams will be ideal.
Programme Duration:
The students’ team will work for 3 semesters starting March 2023.Â
Fund disbursement:Â
Fund disbursals up to INR 100K based on the level of investment of the projects.Â
SEM 1
Concept and Design Development
Understanding the need and defining a solution
Evaluation of project scope and feasibility
End-use of the product/solution
Design of solution/product based on concept development
Establish test goals to validate usability
Develop a budget
Teams get first round of funding
SEM 2
Product Development
Build the proof of concept, iterate, refine and repeat
Teams will undergo 2 rounds of evaluation by faculty and industry mentors
Students receive 2nd round of funding
SEM 3
Deployment and validation
Teams validate prototypes against pre-set goals, document usage data and refine their solution. Involvement of faculty is larger in this phase
Selection criteria for the proposed projectsÂ
Selection Criteria:
Both software solutions and hardware product ideas are eligible.Â
Teams must solve a relevant problem in a problem statement in a defined time-bound manner.Â
Proposals will be evaluated and shortlisted based on the budget submitted.Â
While effectiveness and innovative solutions are desired, the product need not be patentable.
Evaluation Criteria:
Relevance: Is the solution addressing a real problems within the Institute?Â
Effectiveness: Technical Feasibility. Does the prototype work? Is it cost-effective?Â
Complexity: Is the project challenging and non-trivial? Measurable impact.Â
Quality and DurabilityÂ
Viability: Is it commercially viable?Â
More from Less: it should require low capital investment, have employment generation possibilities, easy to use, etc.
Framework:
Initial screening will be done by the Institute Technical Council. The next round of screening will be done by Faculty members.
Faculty core group will perform periodic evaluations in concept and design stages to make go/no-go decisions on projects.
